A Milwaukee Legacy – Storied Past, Bright Future
Founded in 1923, Super Steel, is a world-class contract metal fabrication, coating, and assembly provider. It started with an idea of manufacturing a new type of metal basement window, as well as metal fireproof windows and doors. Over the years, Super Steel began gradually adding manufacturing metal cabinets, switchboards, air coolers for generators, even weapons during WWII.
When Super Steel began it was located at 4th and McKinley in Milwaukee with only 13 employees. In 1965 it was purchased by serial entrepreneur Fred Luber, and its path to becoming a manufacturing icon in southeastern Wisconsin began. Its transformation and growth began almost immediately with its move to 2800 West Capitol Drive in Milwaukee after being notified that they had to make way for a new expressway.
Under Fred’s leadership, Super Steel quickly outgrew the West Capitol Drive facility, and in October of 1975 broke ground at Tower Ave. This new facility soon grew to employ over 150 employees. Over the years it added large production facilities on Calumet Ave, Milwaukee as well as Schenectady, New York, employing more than 450 team members. Super Steel had developed expertise in manufacturing a variety of metal fabrications including grain silos, GM dealer identification signs, and complex components for the locomotive industry, including complete cabs and long hoods that it still manufactures today.
At the age of 80, Fred retired from the industry he loved, selling Super Steel to an employee leadership group. Due to continued aggressive growth and the sudden effects of a failing economy, the company was forced to find new ways to operate. As part of a strategic effort to reposition the company for continued growth and success, Super Steel reorganized and the Luber family repurchased the business in 2010.
Through the Luber family’s reputation and passion for the business and the community it supports, the company has expanded its ability to create jobs and reestablish credibility with its workforce, suppliers, and customers. It continues to expand and diversify offerings, capabilities, markets serviced and its customer base. In 2021, Super Steel made another pivotal decision to move and consolidate operations to its large Mequon, Wisconsin campus, continuing its deep commitment to employees, customers, and the community.
